Should you use a Maui Wedding Planner?

Unless you are familiar with what Maui has to offer, a full service maui wedding planner is highly recommended. Besides making all the arrangements for you (something to consider if you're trying to make phone calls from a different time zone and racking up huge long distance charges in the process), they'll be able to keep an eye on costs.

Be sure to look for a planner who is flexible, easy to understand, and prompt in their replies to you. A good planner should be able to accommodate your personal preferences.

Ask a potential wedding planner who they typically use for flowers, photography, officiants, etc. It's vital that you know all the players in this most important event!

If you're not entirely satisfied with the person or company the planner recommends, then make your OWN suggestions. It may cost you a little more to get the photographer, floral designer or musician of your choice, but the payoff can be great!

Weddings in Maui Requirements

A marriage license agent for the State of Hawaii will issue your license. Both the bride and groom must be present when the license is issued. You each must present a valid picture I.D. (drivers license or passport), and applicants 19 or under must have written parental or legal guardian permission. There is no waiting period, no residency requirement and no blood tests or shots required.

The license is good for thirty days. The fee is $60.00 in cash. Your birthplace, the names of parents and final divorce decree information, if applicable, will be required on the license application.

An appointment to obtain the license should be scheduled directly with a licensing agent, located on all islands in Hawaii. For agent contact information, call the local office of the Hawaii State Department of Health:

Maui: (808) 984-8210
Lanai: (808) 565-6411
Molokai: (808) 553-3663
Kauai: (808) 352-3498
Hawaii: (808) 974-6008

The central marriage license office is located in Oahu at the Hawaii State Department of Health, Kinau Hale, 1250 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813. Recorded information is provided by phone (808) 586-4545. The office will send a “Marriage License Application” packet to interested parties from out of state.

The person performing the marriage must be licensed by the State of Hawaii Department of Health. Upon completion of the ceremony, the officiant sends the marriage license directly to the local Department of Health Registrar, to be filed as the official marriage certificate with the State Registrar and Vital Records Section.

The certified copy of the marriage certificate is mailed to the married couple approximately 120 days after receipt from the officiant. If the certified copy is needed sooner, the marriage license agent will provide a request form, which can be mailed to the Vital Records Section along with a $10 fee charged by the Department of Health for this service.

Maui Weddings are the most romantic events in Hawaii.

What's the procedure for obtaining a marriage license in Hawaii?

The Hawaii Department of Health web site goes into full detail concerning the requirements. Below are the main points...

HOW TO APPLY FOR A MARRIAGE LICENSE

The prospective bride and groom must appear together in person before a marriage license agent to apply for a marriage license. Proxies are not allowed.
The prospective bride and groom should be prepared to provide the necessary proof of age and present any required written consents and approvals. All of the necessary documents should be obtained prior to applying for a marriage license.
The prospective bride and groom must prepare an official application (you can fill most of this out before you get to Hawaii) and file the application in person with the marriage license agent (this must be done on Maui).
Upon approval, a marriage license is issued at the time the application is made.
The marriage license costs $65.00, payable in cash at the time the application is made.
The marriage license is good only in, but is valid throughout, the State of Hawaii.
The marriage license expires 30 days from and including the date of issuance, after which it automatically becomes null and void.
